▶ CHARACTER NAME: Loki CANON: Marvel Cinematic Universe CANON POINT: post Infinity War, after Thanos kills him AGE: unclear, but 1000+ BACKGROUND:Link to Marvel wiki!
PERSONALITY:
Loki has appeared in six of the MCU movies, and is one of the most versatile characters from this universe, going from playful sidekick to ruthless villain to reluctant anti-hero.
Loki is someone who, for the first and longest part of his life, was looked upon by the ones he loved and admired, and found wanting. Or at least, so he believes. As a result, he grew up emotionally stunted, his fragile ego trying to assert itself by any means he could find, taking pride in his rank and in his power. From a very young age, he attempted to distinguish himself from his brother by siding with his mother and practising magic, though this was despised by most of Asgard.
Loki's world came crumbling down around him during the events of Thor, when all he had believed to be true about his heritage suddenly proved a lie, and he was relegated to the position of an unwanted, inconvenient bargaining chip. His heart was broken deeply and durably and healed this way, hardened by his wrath but no less splintered. As a result, Loki wants what he cannot have.
His sense of self-worth has been so profoundly damaged that he over-compensates by thinking himself much superior to anybody he meets. He would not admit it, but his whole life revolves around rebuilding his shattered ego and finding his place (preferably, a position of power), within the universe.
He sees himself as perpetually despised and slighted by others, and intends to take his revenge for it. His tendency to resort to bad faith, denial, or even re-write history to ignore what he doesn't want to see or acknowledge merely makes the problem worse.
Loki is a very good liar, masterfully deceiving others, but also himself. While he is acutely aware of other people's faults and mistakes, he will turn a blind eye on his own and compartmentalize his own evil deeds as to always believe himself the hero of his own story, fighting people who slighted him to recover what was his birthright. There is no telling whether Loki actually believes his own lies. Probably not, but he has no desire to look into it too deeply all the same.
Loki is extremely intelligent, albeit in a very specific way. He is literate and well-learnt in almost every field Asgard has to offer, including the occult. He is very curious to learn more about most things and will often seek out books and ask questions from knowledgeable individuals. Mostly, however, he is shrewd. Loki is very good at manipulating people and hatching plots to appropriate what is not his.
He's not strictly speaking evil, but he values his own life and goals far higher than any collateral damage he could cause, and will show little remorse in swatting away whoever is in his path. There is no good and evil to him, only Loki's side, and what he has to do to get what he wants.
Loki considers -or wants to consider- sentiment as a liability. In a way he is right to do so, as most of his mistakes revolve around being blinded by his own feelings: envy, rage, and even love. When hurt or angered he can get eminently vicious and there is little he wouldn't do to achieve his purpose.
However, despite what he may say, Loki cares for what Odin thought of him, and loved his mother, Frigga, very deeply. He also has conflicted feelings about Thor, whom he loves and resents in equal measures. They have a complicated history, though their relationship seemed to stabilize during Ragnarok, just before Loki died.
Loki has very few friends, both because he alienated most of them, and because he is slow to trust. Friendship is difficult for Loki, mostly because he is wary of being found wanting by the very people he likes best, and because he knows too well that the urge to betray his friends, should it be of any profit to him, would be difficult to resist. In short, being disliked is easier than being liked, as it places no expectations upon him to fulfil.
He may, however, establish temporary friendships or alliances, if he thinks it may benefit him in any way. If other characters' goals align with his own he won't hesitate to help them, but he will also potentially betray them as soon as it seems to be more profitable. He can even show himself to be kind or charming on occasion, but he will seldom do it without ulterior motives. He is twisted and, to a certain extent, broken, and though he has been shown to work towards some form of redemption, will most likely remain so.
The lighter side of Loki's character is his trickster persona, which manifests itself in playful, sometimes even harmless, ways. He can never resist a good prank or a clever retort, and can go to great lengths to plan a particularly clever joke.
To finish, Loki has a liking for chaos in general, for creating mayhem and disturbing the natural order of things. He likes to think of himself as completely unpredictable, though he can generally be trusted to do what is best to further his own goals.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
He has a lot of powers and abilities, and they are somewhat inconsistent depending on the movies. I'll keep them reasonable so he can fit in the game!
His powers involve:
- casting illusions: on himself, others or the environment around him. He also uses this to make himself invisible. - shape-shifting into pretty much anything he wants - reverting to his real form, which is Jotun, and the little bit of ice magic that goes with it. - some energy projection / creation of defensive force-fields - general spell-casting, which could potentially involve anything, really. I'll make sure to keep it reasonable. - magic "pockets" he uses to keep things he cares about, mostly clothes, books and a lot of daggers. I will keep this to the items mentioned in the inventory below. - the ability to easily summon things he's placed in said pockets.
If some of this is a problem, I'm quite okay to make him unable to use some of his powers while he is on Prisma, though.
As for his abilities, he is much stronger than the average human, and much more resilient. He is also faster and quieter. He is hard to hurt and heals much more quickly than a human would. Due to his Jotun nature, he is also very resistant to cold.
He's an expert at lying and manipulating others, to an almost preternatural extent. It's worth mentioning, however, that since most of the people who know him know this and expect it from him, it makes it a lot more difficult to trick them.
He is a proficient fighter, both with magic and with knives and spears.
